Why this one exists

A step lets the heel drop below the toes, which a flat floor cannot do. That extra range is why stairs show up in so many calf programs.

Set up

Stand on a step holding a rail. The balls of both feet on the edge, or one foot at a time if that feels safer.

Steps

  1. Let the right heel sink below the step.
  2. Keep a soft knee for soleus, or a straighter knee for gastroc — pick one and stay there for the hold.
  3. Press the rail. Do not balance on heroics.
  4. Switch feet.

What you should feel

A longer calf stretch than the wall version. Stay in control.

Skip if it hurts

Skip the drop if you have a current Achilles issue, or if you do not have a rail. The wall stretch is enough.

Common mistakes

Do not bounce at the bottom. Do not do this on a wet step.
